They send a subpoena to the internet provider for every IP address on their list to unmask the people they claim downloaded their movie.
After your internet service provider gets the subpoena with your IP address on it, they send you a letter as required by law. It is best to settle your case before your name is disclosed if you plan to settle. If the attorney already has your name you can still get a fair settlement, but your name is now in their records.
