Bodyguard movie download case

Since January of 2017, Bodyguard Productions has filed movie download lawsuits against 688 Chicago area residents. They started 2018 in Chicago by filing 5 new cases against 131 people. Bodyguard is suing for copyright infringement for alleged BitTorrent downloading and distribution of  “The Hitman’s Bodyguard.”  The downloading and distribution can happen when people use apps or websites to watch movies “for free.” If you are reading this, you probably got a letter from your internet service provider or from an attorney about a Bodyguard movie download case.

First, Bodyguard files the cases with the court by filing a complaint. A copy of their complaint can be seen here. Bodyguard uses the same one in each case and changes only the list of IP addresses. Then Bodyguard asks the court for permission to send out subpoenas. They send a subpoena to the internet provider for every IP address on their list to unmask the people they claim downloaded their movie.

After your internet service provider gets the subpoena with your IP address on it, they send you a letter as required by law. You have a window of opportunity to settle your case before your identity is disclosed. Your internet service provider gives you a deadline a the bottom of the letter. It is best to settle your case before your name is disclosed if you plan to settle. If the attorney already has your name you can still get a fair settlement, but your name is now in their records.
